Denzel Washington is teaming with Christopher McQuarrie, the writer-director behind the recent “Mission: Impossible” films, for an untitled original crime thriller at Amazon MGM Studios and its United Artists label. The project has already been dated for a theatrical release on October 1, 2027.

It is the kind of pairing that draws attention on name value alone. Washington is one of the most reliable dramatic leads of his generation; McQuarrie has spent the last decade engineering some of the most elaborate action set pieces in modern Hollywood. This film points them at something smaller and more interior than a globe-trotting spy franchise.

The premise

The story, as described in the trade reporting, follows a former police detective serving a life sentence. After a terminal brain-cancer diagnosis leaves him with roughly six months to live, he is granted compassionate release and returns home — to an estranged daughter he walked away from and a grandson he has never met. His stated aim is to make amends and leave his past behind. His past, the logline promises, has other plans.

It is a setup built for exactly the register Washington is known for: a weary, morally complicated man trying to do one last right thing before the clock runs out. The screenplay comes from Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner.

Who is making it

McQuarrie directs and produces, with a deep bench behind him. The producing team reported across the trades includes Heather McQuarrie; Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt through United Artists; Joseph Restaino for Hungry Bull Productions; Reza Moheet and Norman Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment; Katia Washington; and Tommy Harper. Amazon MGM Studios is the studio behind it.

A dying ex-detective, a daughter he abandoned, a grandson he has never met — and a past that will not let him go.

For Washington, the lane is familiar. The lone operator with a violent history is the territory of his “Equalizer” trilogy. What is new is the collaborator: a director whose recent work is defined by precision and scale, now steering a contained, adult drama. For McQuarrie, stepping out of a long “Mission: Impossible” run to make a character piece like this is a notable pivot in its own right.

Casting beyond Washington has not been announced, and the film is untitled for now. What is locked is the date. Barring a change, the movie arrives in theaters on October 1, 2027 — far enough out that there is plenty still to learn, and close enough that it already has a place on the calendar.
